India Cottage is exactly the quintessential cottage we drew as children, the kitchen and lounge downstairs with bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. Built in the 1850s and Grade 2 listed, it has some quirky features both inside and out giving it both special charm and real character.
Through the front door to the left, there is a well-equipped kitchen with a round table seating for four. Although compact, the kitchen has all the mod-cons needed including, microwave, gas cooker, fridge-freezer, full-sized dishwasher and Nespresso machine. There is plenty of crockery, cutlery, glassware and cookware to self-cater or just pop down to the town for a naughty takeaway or a meal out in one of the many restaurants just a minute away in the town.
To the right is the cosy lounge, with a modern comfortable ‘L’ shaped sofa, bespoke pine furniture, containing family games, IoW jigsaw and a good selection of maps, guides and books about the Island. There is a 'smart' LG HD TV with Freesat, Blu-ray DVD player, selection of DVDs plus a quality portable bluetooth speaker to link to your own playback device. We now have a HP Laserjet printer for those needing to work whilst away from home.
Warm yourselves in front of this charming and cozy "Hobbit" Defra accredited wood-burning stove. Using locally sourced briquettes the stove adds real charm to the lounge, relax with the smart TV, bluetooth speaker, books or games kept at the cottage.
Upstairs to the left is the master bedroom with a sea-view and comfy king-size bed and door into the ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom (shared with bedroom two). There is a good sized wardrobe, chest of drawers and hairdryer. In addition to the Venetian blind there is also a blackout blind.
Bedroom two has a sea view and view down Tulse Hill to the town. It can either be configured as two full-width single beds or a spacious zip’n’link super-king (on request). There is a small wardrobe and underbed storage. In addition to the Venetian blind there is also a blackout blind. Access to the shared 'Jack & Jill' bathroom & W/C is via a quirky small door on the immediately adjacent stairs.
The 'Jack and Jill' bathroom shared between both bedrooms has a classic Victorian themed bath/shower, W/C and basin. Plus plenty of hanging space for cosmetics and toiletries.
Also upstairs is the back-door leading past the handy washing machine/tumble drier utility room, and stairs up to the lower ‘beachcomber’ themed terrace. Sheltered in the lee of the cottage, this lower terrace has a comfy summer day-sofa and undercover area with a handy fridge to keep your drinks nice and cool.
Step up from the Lower Terrace via the quaint 'Half Penny' step, where you will find a small mid-terrace with a mosaic café-style table and chairs for two, ideal to share a freshly brewed coffee and croissant, or even a glass of wine. Continue on up the steep steps to access the main feature Top-Terrace to your right.
The top-terrace has superb sea views across Ventnor’s Victorian townscape. Whether sunbathing in the comfortable loungers or dining alfresco at the French café-style table, you are bound to spend time up here relaxing, watching the sailing boats, commercial ships and cruise liners go past. In the evening the terrace solar lights come on, making it a magical place to have a drink before retiring to bed. For winter guests there are two chill busting infra-red heaters.
The cottage is less than a two-minute walk down to Ventnor's quaint and independent led town centre and under ten minutes’ walk to Ventnor's sand and shingle beach. The cottage is ideally placed as a base to explore the island on foot, two-wheels or by car or public transport.
We do welcome well-behaved dogs, but ask you bring your own dog blankets and dog towels. For guests with dogs, there is an additional grassed exercise area that can be accessed from the top terrace, by prior arrangement (not suitable for general use).
Ventnor is known for having limited private parking, India Cottage boasts two private parking spaces for its guests. One large space right next to the cottage with solar courtesy light and a second smaller one up in Southgrove Road, adjacent to the top garden.
